Pet Cremation FAQs - Fort Worth & Tarrant County

We know this is one of the hardest times you'll face. Below are honest, compassionate answers to the questions families most often ask us about pet cremation in Fort Worth and the surrounding area.

Private Cremation 4 Days or Less 24/7 Availability
Getting Started

What to Do When Your Pet Passes Away

These are the first questions most families have in those heartbreaking initial moments.

What happens to my pet's body immediately after they pass away?

After your pet passes, their body goes through natural changes. Within minutes to a few hours, you may notice the muscles relax (causing the jaw and eyes to open slightly), the body will become stiff (rigor mortis), and there may be some natural fluid discharge. These are completely normal and expected physical processes.

We recommend gently wrapping your pet in a soft towel or blanket and placing them in a cool room until you're ready to contact us. Call us at (817) 862-7000 whenever you're ready, there's no rush, and we'll guide you through every step.

How soon should I call after my pet passes away?

We recommend calling as soon as you feel ready, ideally within a few hours. Natural decomposition begins quickly, especially in warm Texas weather. If you need a little time to be with your pet before calling, that's completely understandable, simply place them in a cool location in the meantime.

We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (817) 862-7000, including weekends and holidays, for families across Fort Worth, Arlington, North Richland Hills, Hurst, Euless, and all of Tarrant County.

Can I temporarily preserve my pet’s body until I’m ready?

Yes. If you need a little more time before making arrangements, the best option is to place your pet in a cooler with ice packs. You may also refrigerate your pet’s body temporarily. Refrigeration can usually give you an extra 24 to 48 hours.

If freezing is necessary, that is okay as well. Please let us know when you call so we can plan accordingly.

Do I need to take my pet to the vet before calling you?

No. You do not need a veterinary visit before contacting us for cremation arrangements. If your pet passed away at home under expected circumstances (illness, old age), you can call us directly. If the circumstances were unexpected or you have questions about the cause of death, a vet visit may be appropriate before cremation, but it is not required.

If your pet passed at a veterinary clinic or emergency animal hospital, you can still choose to use our services rather than the provider they recommend.

Can I bury my pet in my backyard in Fort Worth?

Home burial of pets is generally permitted in many Texas residential areas, but local ordinances vary. HOA agreements, deed restrictions, or rental leases may also prohibit home burial, so check those as well. In Fort Worth, you should check with the city before burying a pet in your yard. Generally, remains must be buried at least 3 feet deep and away from water sources. If you're unsure or prefer an alternative, pet cremation in Fort Worth offers a clean, dignified option with no permitting concerns.

The Process

Understanding Pet Cremation

We believe in transparency. Here's exactly how the process works from start to finish.

What is private pet cremation, and why does it matter?

Private cremation means your pet is placed alone in the cremation chamber. No other animals are present at any time during the process. This is the most important distinction in the pet cremation industry. It guarantees that the ashes you receive back belong exclusively to your beloved companion.

Some providers offer "communal" cremation (multiple pets cremated together) or "partitioned" cremation (multiple pets in one chamber with dividers). At Precious Pets Cremation Services, we offer true private cremation because we believe your pet deserves individual care and dignity.

What exactly happens during the cremation process?

Pet cremation is a careful, respectful process. Your pet is placed in the cremation chamber, where temperatures reach between 1,400°F and 1,800°F. The process typically takes 45 minutes to several hours depending on your pet's size. After cremation, the remaining bone fragments are carefully processed into the fine, powdery ash most people refer to as "ashes" or "cremated remains."

The remains are then placed in a dignified container or urn and prepared for return to your family. Every step is handled with the care and respect your pet deserves.

How long does pet cremation take from drop-off to receiving ashes?

At Precious Pets Cremation Services, we return your pet's ashes in 4 days or less, significantly faster than most providers in the Fort Worth area, who may take a week or longer. We understand that having your pet's remains back is an important part of the grieving process, and we work hard to honor that need promptly.

What do the ashes look like, and how much will there be?

The cremated remains are typically a light gray or off-white color and have a fine, sandy texture. The amount varies depending on your pet's size and bone density. As a general guideline:

  • Small pets (under 10 lbs): roughly ½ to 1 cup of ashes
  • Medium pets (10–50 lbs): roughly 1 to 3 cups of ashes
  • Large pets (50+ lbs): roughly 3 to 5+ cups of ashes

These are estimates, individual results vary.

How can I be sure the ashes I receive are really my pet's?

We take the authenticity of your pet's remains very seriously. Each pet is tracked with an identification tag that stays with them throughout the entire cremation process, from intake to the return of remains. Our process is designed with integrity at every step. We encourage you to visit our facility and ask questions. Transparency is something we are proud of and welcome.

What types of pets do you cremate?

We provide cremation services for all types of beloved companion animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets, reptiles, and other small animals. If you are unsure whether we can accommodate your pet, please call us at (817) 862-7000 and we'll be happy to help.

Is pet cremation environmentally friendly?

Pet cremation has a smaller environmental footprint than traditional burial in many cases, as it does not involve embalming chemicals or permanent land use. Modern pet cremation equipment is designed to minimize emissions. If environmental impact is a concern for your family, please ask us about our equipment and practices when you call.

Yes. We offer online arrangement options for families who prefer to handle things digitally rather than by phone. You can visit pet-cremations.com to get started at any time, day or night.

Do you pick up from veterinary clinics in Fort Worth?

Yes. If your pet passed away at a veterinary clinic, emergency animal hospital, or specialty clinic in Fort Worth, Arlington, Hurst, Euless, North Richland Hills, or elsewhere in Tarrant County, we can coordinate pick-up directly from the facility. Simply let us know when you call.

What should I bring when I drop off my pet?

When you come in, you'll just need your contact information for our records. You may also bring any special items you'd like cremated with your pet (a small blanket, toy, or note, please ask us about what's appropriate). If you have already selected an urn from our Urn Store, bring that as well and we'll use it for the remains.

Urns & Memorials

Urns, Keepsakes & Honoring Your Pet

Your pet deserves a lasting tribute. Here are options for honoring their memory.

What container will my pet's ashes be returned in?

Your pet's ashes are returned in a dignified container. We also offer a full selection of memorial urns, keepsake boxes, and other vessels in our Urn Store if you'd like something more personalized. You can choose an urn before or after the cremation.

Can I get a paw print or fur clipping before cremation?

Yes. We can take a paw print impression and/or a small fur clipping from your pet before the cremation as a lasting keepsake. Please let us know when you call or drop off your pet so we can arrange this for you. These small mementos often bring great comfort in the weeks and months ahead.

Can I scatter my pet's ashes? Are there any rules in Fort Worth?

Scattering cremated pet remains is generally permitted on private property with the landowner's permission. In public parks and open spaces in Fort Worth and Tarrant County, regulations vary. We recommend checking with local parks authorities. Many families scatter ashes in a meaningful outdoor location, mix them into memorial garden soil, or keep them at home in an urn.

Can I have jewelry made from my pet's ashes?

Yes. Memorial jewelry, such as pendants or rings containing a small amount of your pet's cremated remains, is a beautiful way to keep your companion close. Several third-party artists and companies specialize in this service. We can point you in the right direction when you visit us or call.

What should I do if I have another pet's ashes from a previous provider?

If you have a beloved pet's ashes from a previous cremation that you'd like to memorialize in a different urn or keepsake, we'd be happy to help. Visit our Urn Store or call us to discuss your options.

Do you offer any grief support resources?

Losing a pet is a profound loss, and grief is entirely valid. While we are not a counseling service, we treat every family with compassion and patience. We can point you toward local pet loss support groups in Fort Worth and online communities where you can connect with others who understand the bond you shared with your pet.

Pricing & Choosing a Provider

Costs, Comparisons & Making the Right Choice

Transparent pricing and honest guidance to help you make an informed decision.

How much does pet cremation cost in Fort Worth?

Pet cremation prices in Fort Worth vary depending on your pet's size, the type of cremation (private vs. semi-private), and the provider you choose. We believe in transparent, fair pricing with no hidden fees. Please visit our Pricing page or call (817) 862-7000 for a detailed breakdown of our current rates.

We will never pressure you into services you don't need. Our goal is to give your pet a dignified farewell at a price that respects your budget during a difficult time.

Do I have to use the cremation provider my vet recommends?

Absolutely not. You have the right to choose any licensed cremation provider you trust. Many veterinary clinics in Fort Worth, Arlington, and across Tarrant County partner with specific cremation services, but there is no legal or ethical obligation for you to use that provider. We encourage pet owners to compare options, ask questions, and choose based on trust, transparency, and values, not just convenience.

What questions should I ask when comparing pet cremation providers?

Here are the most important things to ask any pet cremation provider in Fort Worth or anywhere in Tarrant County:

  • Is this truly a private cremation, my pet alone in the chamber?
  • How do you track my pet to ensure I receive their ashes?
  • Can I visit your facility?
  • How long until I receive the ashes?
  • Are all fees disclosed upfront?
  • Are you licensed and inspected?

We welcome all of these questions and are proud to answer each one with complete transparency.

Your veterinarian is your best resource for this conversation. We are here to support whatever decision you make, with compassion and without judgment.

More Questions

Additional Questions We Often Hear

A few more things families in Fort Worth and across Tarrant County often want to know.

Can I be present during the cremation?

Some cremation providers allow family members to be present at the start of the cremation as part of a farewell ceremony. Please call us at (817) 862-7000 to ask about this option. We will do our best to accommodate your wishes.

What if my pet passes away on a weekend or holiday?

We are available around the clock, including weekends and all major holidays. You will always reach a real person when you call (817) 862-7000. No one should have to wait until Monday morning to make arrangements for a beloved companion.

Can two pets be cremated together (bonded pairs)?

Yes. For bonded pets, such as two dogs or cats who spent their entire lives together, we can honor that bond by cremating them together at the family's request. Please let us know your wishes when you call, and we will do everything we can to accommodate this meaningful request.

How do I transport my pet's ashes on a plane?

The TSA and most airlines allow cremated pet remains in carry-on baggage as long as they are in a container that can pass through X-ray screening. Wooden and metal urns often cannot be screened, so a temporary plastic or cardboard container may be required for air travel. We recommend contacting your airline ahead of time. We can provide documentation certifying the contents if needed.

What if I live outside Fort Worth, can you still help me?

Yes. We serve the entire Fort Worth–Arlington–Mid-Cities area and beyond. Whether you're in North Richland Hills, Euless, Hurst, Bedford, Keller, or further out in Tarrant or Johnson County, we can very likely help. Do you offer any payment plans or financial assistance?

We understand that unexpected pet loss can also bring unexpected financial stress. Please call us to discuss your situation. We will always do our best to work with your family. We believe every pet deserves a dignified farewell regardless of financial circumstances.
